Matthew Hayden Proposes Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal as Openers
As the T20 World Cup 2024 excitement continues to brew, there is a lot of talk about India’s best lineup. A few days ago, cricket’s former Australian star, Matthew Hayden, made a big suggestion. Virat Kohli should open the batting alongside young Yashasvi Jaiswal. The suggestion comes at a time when Kohli is performing incredibly in the IPL 2024. In most of the matches, Kohli has helped his team score many fast runs, especially in the early overs of the matches. Hayden’s motive in the suggestion is to leverage Kohli’s attacking batting style.
This is because he points out that teams used to score as fast as they could when he said Kohli as an opener posted impressive stats. When the batsman posts fast runs and also scores most of the runs, then India would take a headstart. Although Jaiswal had an uneven performance in the IPL 2024 season, he made some impressive contributions. However, his remarkable performance was a fantastic century against Mumbai Indians in which he secured 104 runs off 60 balls. This opportunity put him in an elite company with big superstars like Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle, and David Warner.
As a result, his performance may change the game based on his performance. He garnered 225 runs from 8 games, averaging 32.14 and SR 157.34. Jaiswal smashed 27 boundaries and 9 over boundaries. Therefore, combining this wonderful performance with Virat Kohli’s outstanding season may provide a remarkable combo for the Indian team at the T20 World Cup. Kohli enjoyed a wonderful season and was the top performer at the time. In any case, his proficiency and experience counterbalance Jaiswal’s aggressive approach. Therefore, working together will help the Indian team establish a good record as a strong partner in selecting the right team.
On the other hand, he feels that Rohit Sharma, who opens, should come to bat as player number four. He believes Rohit could play slowly and rebuild the innings given that the initial primary batters disrupt the field. The concept is to bring out the best in each player. By leveraging Kohli’s bombarding style in the initial stages to keep the scoreboard busy with Rohit later down the order, India could cover all aspects. Additionally, having these two players play and adding Jaiswal’s impressive debut could ensure the opening World Cup in the reshuffled ICC gets things interesting.
Since the T20 World Cup is set to be played in the USA and West Indies, moving across many pitches will be ideal. Hence, the probable lineup presented by Hayden. Hence, it would be interesting to see if India’s coaches and captains make a bold call to maximize their chances. keep in mind that India will face Pakistan on 9th June at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.
