The Brian Lara Cricket Academy is a sporting jewel situated in the bustling heart of Tarouba, Trinidad. Initially completed in 2017, this multi-purpose stadium is a living testament to the propensity of Trinidad and Tobago towards the sport of cricket. The venue is aptly named after the legendary West Indies skipper Brian Lara, who remained holder of the record for the highest individual Test match score until it was surpassed by the great Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar. The AC refers to the site’s seating capacity of 15,000, supplied using fixed seating as well as grass banks, which provides a unique basketball-watching experience. It was part of a more extensive 180-acre sports complex.
The stadium was inaugurated on behalf of Trinidad and Tobago’s administration in 2004 despite facing numerous challenges during its development, including significant delays and cost overruns. However, three years later, the prestigious facility opened its doors to the public and is equipped with top facilities, delivered by the prominent US architectural firm Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum. Over the years, the Academy has emerged as the center for cricketing operations in the West Indies, with various important tournaments including the Caribbean Premier League and ICC Men’s T20 World Cup games held at this facility. Furthermore, it has served as a base for developing players through access to cutting-edge playing fields, including four indoor training pitches that have been installed with modern biometric systems.
The Academy also serves purposes other than cricket; numerous other facilities such as an aquatic center or a hotel are planned to be constructed in the future with an additional cost of TT$190 million. Despite the original estimate of TT$257 million, Trinidad and Tobago has invested more than TT$1 billion in constructing the state-of-the-art facility, demonstrating the nation’s devotion to sports infrastructure and development.
